My Most Successful Project

My most successful project was the first project that we did. I created a lion and tiger using chalk pastels and charcoal on wood planks. I used line as my highlighted art device. I thought that this piece was successful because the final product was similar to the pictures that i went off of. I was content with how the final project looked and that is why I find this particular project to be my most successful. I was proud of what the completed piece looked like so now I have it in my room.

My Least Successful Project

This project was my least successful. I tried to get a good muse for the idea behind this piece but I had a hard time getting into it. Even though this project wasn't a success, I still enjoyed using the colored pencils as my medium. I didn't end up completing this project because I ran out of time in class but I will probably continue it at home. I was planning on creating a modern version of a typical housewife compared to that in the fifties or sixties but I was never able to execute it.

NCMA

The first painting of the African American man was the painting that I liked after I looked at it for a while and read the description. The description noted that it was supposed to be mixing contemporary and classic types of art by infusing the classical pose with modern clothing and colors that a sense of juxtaposition.

The painting of the six women was the painting that I did not like. I didn't think that it really had any meaning behind it so  I decided to read the description. The description did not actually describe the purpose or meaning of the painting which led me to believe it did not have any message at all. The one thing that I did like about this piece was the size and move theater type of feeling it created. It looked as if the painting was a still from a film.

The painting that I really liked as soon as I saw it was the one of the man painting the portrait of the woman within the painting. I really liked how the brush strokes were obvious and the paint was layered. It had a lot of texture and the colors that were mellow tones that all worked well together.

Is art without meaning decoration?

I think that the purpose of art is to portray an idea or feeling. Therefore, art that doesn't have a meaning of purpose could be defined as decoration. People use art to express themselves and feelings they can't explain and that's the greatest different between art and decoration. If there is no story or message behind a piece of art, it should be classified as decoration. The definition of art is: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.  Art can only be art if some thought is put into it so art without meaning is in fact decoration in my opinion.

I don't think art without meaning can be considered art. I think it is more decoration than art because art should portray an underlying message using an image.

I chose line as my element and used mostly line like strokes to create the majority of the pieces that make up my project, I chose to work with charcoal because I am comfortable using charcoal and Mr.
Sands had the great idea of creating my piece on planks of wood that we cut into 3 pieces and I am making a collection with 3 different animals on each third of the wood. I chose to do a lion, tiger and bear because I found an image of a bear made up only line strokes and from there I got the idea.

Shoe Drawing with Value

The first thing I did in this project was pick out the shoes I wanted to draw. I positioned the shoes so that they caught the light well and looked interesting. I outlined the shoes first once I started drawing and then continued to shade and add value to enhance the light source and the shadows. I made the right side of the project the side with the light source and the left side with the cast shadows. After I drew the shoes with details and value, I drew the tabletop line which showed where the shoes were placed when I was drawing them. I enjoyed doing this project because my favorite thing to do in art is to draw.

2 Point Perspective Letter Drawing

I chose to use these colors and letters because I felt like it really expresses my personality in a vivid way. The first thing I did was choose the letters I wanted to use in my drawing. Then I choose the color scheme I wanted to use. I used a variety of bright colors to capture the eye of my viewers. Then I choose the design for my background using the colors that I had already chosen. I used a vanishing point to make the letters in my drawing look three dimensional. To finish it off I lightly shaded my drawing with a regular pencil.
