NCMA

The first painting of the African American man was the painting that I liked after I looked at it for a while and read the description. The description noted that it was supposed to be mixing contemporary and classic types of art by infusing the classical pose with modern clothing and colors that a sense of juxtaposition.

The painting of the six women was the painting that I did not like. I didn't think that it really had any meaning behind it so  I decided to read the description. The description did not actually describe the purpose or meaning of the painting which led me to believe it did not have any message at all. The one thing that I did like about this piece was the size and move theater type of feeling it created. It looked as if the painting was a still from a film.

The painting that I really liked as soon as I saw it was the one of the man painting the portrait of the woman within the painting. I really liked how the brush strokes were obvious and the paint was layered. It had a lot of texture and the colors that were mellow tones that all worked well together.

Is art without meaning decoration?

I think that the purpose of art is to portray an idea or feeling. Therefore, art that doesn't have a meaning of purpose could be defined as decoration. People use art to express themselves and feelings they can't explain and that's the greatest different between art and decoration. If there is no story or message behind a piece of art, it should be classified as decoration. The definition of art is: the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.  Art can only be art if some thought is put into it so art without meaning is in fact decoration in my opinion.

I don't think art without meaning can be considered art. I think it is more decoration than art because art should portray an underlying message using an image.

I chose line as my element and used mostly line like strokes to create the majority of the pieces that make up my project, I chose to work with charcoal because I am comfortable using charcoal and Mr.
Sands had the great idea of creating my piece on planks of wood that we cut into 3 pieces and I am making a collection with 3 different animals on each third of the wood. I chose to do a lion, tiger and bear because I found an image of a bear made up only line strokes and from there I got the idea.
